Best time to travel: June–September & December–February (dry seasons). We tailor lodges and timing to the season for the very finest experience.
Essential guidance for your journey
Five days means two treks — double your chances of seeing silverbacks, mothers with infants, and playful juveniles.
Treks range 1–6 hours through steep, muddy terrain. Moderate fitness is enough, but prepare with cardio and hill walks.
June–September and December–February offer clearer trails and easier trekking. But gorillas are there year-round.
Gorilla permits are $1,500 USD per trek. We secure yours in advance; availability is limited and sells out months ahead.
Volcanoes National Park sits at 2,400m. Mornings are cold and misty. Bring waterproof layers, gloves and a warm fleece.
Flash disturbs gorillas. Bring a fast lens (f/2.8 or wider) and shoot at high ISO. The mist and forest mean low light.
Most operators include one — we include two precious gorilla permits for double the magic.
Singita Kwitonda, Bisate and One&Only — the very best in the Virungas.
