Best time to travel: Year-round (whales June–November). We tailor lodges and timing to the season for the very finest experience.
Essential guidance for your journey
Robberg, Lookout and Central beaches are all world-class. Robberg also offers a coastal hike with seal and dolphin sightings.
The Knysna Heads are best at sunrise when the mist lifts and the light is gold. Drive or walk — both are spectacular.
If you skip the full safari but want Big Five, Addo is two hours off-route and entirely self-driveable.
Robertson, Swellendam and Plettenberg all have wine routes. Longer days = room for a tasting stop.
Indian Ocean water is warmest Jan–April (22°C). May–Nov is cooler but less crowded and better for hiking.
Coastal towns are spaced every 50–100 km. Fill up when you see a petrol station; keep snacks and water in the car.
