Lions rest on rocky outcrops (kopjes) to escape the heat and survey the plains. Guides know which kopjes are active.
Golden-hour game drives
The hour after sunrise and before sunset delivers the best light and most active game. Be ready at 05:30.
Layer for temperature
Serengeti mornings (June–Sept) start cold and can hit 30°C by noon. Layers, fleece and windproof jacket essential.
Raptors everywhere
Serengeti raptors include martial eagle, secretary bird and tawny eagle. Birders should bring field guides and bins.
Central Serengeti base
Five days means staying in one region. Central Seronera offers year-round game and kopje lions.
Hydrate constantly
