Overview

Malawi's transformation is one of the great conservation stories of our age. A little over a decade ago its parks had been all but emptied by poaching; today, thanks to African Parks and a series of landmark rewildings, Liwonde and Majete once again hold the Big Five. This six-day journey follows that comeback along the palm-fringed Shire River in Liwonde — where elephant wade at the water's edge and hippo and crocodile crowd the shallows — and into the miombo-clad hills of Majete, the reserve that brought lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo back to Malawi.

This is a safari for travellers who want wildlife without the crowds. You explore by open vehicle, by boat along the Shire and on foot, staying in the intimate riverside tents of Mvuu Lodge and the stone-and-thatch luxury of Mkulumadzi, hidden at the confluence of two rivers in Majete. Between them lies some of the most exciting rewilded wilderness in Africa — and the deep, genuine warmth for which Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa, is famous.
