Overview

Far in Zambia's remote west lies one of Africa's last great secrets — Liuwa Plain, a vast, treeless grassland that hosts the continent's second-largest wildebeest migration. This six-day expedition takes you deep into Barotseland to witness tens of thousands of blue wildebeest sweeping across the endless plain, trailed by hyena clans, cheetah and the plains' famous lions. Staying at the only permanent lodge in the park, you have this staggering wilderness almost entirely to yourself.

Liuwa Plain National Park is one of the most remote and least-visited reserves in Africa, a horizon-to-horizon sea of grass dotted with palm islands. Its wildebeest migration — around 30,000 animals — peaks with the first rains in November, one of the great untamed spectacles on earth. Beyond the herds, Liuwa is famous for enormous clans of spotted hyena, huge flocks of migratory birds, wide-open skies and a profound, humbling sense of space found almost nowhere else.

Who It's For

Made for intrepid wildlife purists, photographers and repeat safari-goers who have done the classic parks and crave somewhere genuinely remote and extraordinary — the kind of place very few travellers ever reach.

Best Time to Travel

Zambia is a classic dry-season safari. June to October is prime, as the bush thins and wildlife concentrates on the shrinking lagoons and rivers — August to October is the spectacular peak for predators and walking. The green emerald season (December to March) is lush and superb for birds and newborns, though some bush camps close when the rains flood the roads.
