Overview
Gorongosa National Park is one of the most extraordinary conservation stories on Earth. At the southern end of Africa's Great Rift Valley, this 4,067 km² wilderness was once described as the finest park in Africa, its flood plains and forests heaving with lion, elephant and immense herds of antelope. Then came Mozambique's civil war, which raged from 1977 to 1992 and destroyed up to 95% of Gorongosa's large mammals.
What has happened since is nothing short of miraculous. Through a landmark partnership between the Mozambican government and the Carr Foundation, Gorongosa has been reborn — not only restoring wildlife but investing in the health, education and livelihoods of the surrounding human communities as the foundation of lasting conservation. Today lions again roar across the plains, elephant herds move through the fever-tree forests, and buffalo, waterbuck, sable and wild dog have returned.
