Africa's Grand Canyon
Fish River Canyon is one of Africa's greatest natural wonders — a colossal gash in the earth's crust that plunges 550 metres into the arid southern Namibian plateau. At 160 kilometres long and up to 27 kilometres wide, it is the largest canyon in Africa and the second-largest in the world after the Grand Canyon. The scale is overwhelming: layer upon layer of ancient sedimentary rock folded, fractured and carved over 500 million years by the Fish River, which now flows as little more than a trickle through the canyon floor.
The main viewpoints — Hobas and Hell's Bend — perch on the northern rim, offering vertiginous panoramas of the canyon's serpentine curves, ochre walls and the thread of green vegetation far below. For serious hikers, the Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail is Namibia's most celebrated multi-day trek: an 85-kilometre, five-day wilderness route that descends into the canyon and follows the riverbed to Ai-Ais, where natural hot springs await weary legs. The trail is open only from May to September (when temperatures are bearable), and hikers must be fit and self-sufficient — there are no facilities, only the river, the rock and the sky.
Ideal for travellers who want to experience Fish River Canyon in privacy and comfort, with expert guiding and the finest lodges the region offers.
Stand on the edge of Africa's Grand Canyon at the main viewpoints — Hobas (the northern entrance) and Hell's Bend, where the canyon curves dramatically.
This is Namibia's ultimate hiking challenge: an 85-kilometre, five-day trek from the northern rim down into the canyon and along the riverbed to Ai-Ais hot springs.
At the southern end of the canyon lies Ai-Ais ("burning water" in Nama), a natural hot-spring resort fed by underground thermal sources.
Hell's Bend is the most dramatic viewpoint on the canyon rim, where the Fish River makes a tight hairpin curve far below.
The approach to Fish River Canyon is an adventure in itself.
Arrive via Windhoek and transfer to your lodge in Fish River Canyon, where a warm welcome and a first taste of the landscape await. After settling in, head out for an orientation drive as the light turns golden, before sundowners and dinner beneath a vast African sky.

Fish River Canyon is at its best in the dry season (May–October (dry season)), when wildlife and conditions peak. Green-season travel brings lush landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent value.
