Overview

Ethiopia's Bale Mountains hold the greatest concentration of large mammal endemics in Africa — and the single best chance on the continent of seeing the Ethiopian wolf, the world's rarest canid, with fewer than 500 left in the wild. This dedicated wildlife safari climbs onto the vast Sanetti Plateau, one of the highest all-weather roads in Africa, to search the Afro-alpine moorland for wolves hunting giant mole-rats, then drops through the misty Harenna Forest to a very different world of lichen-draped trees and elusive lions.

Six nights combine serious wildlife with rich birding and gentle highland walking. You are based for four nights at the award-winning Bale Mountain Lodge, tucked into the Harenna Forest, with comfortable start and finish nights in Addis Ababa. Search the Gaysay grasslands for the endemic mountain nyala and Menelik's bushbuck, scan the plateau for wolves and highland raptors, and tick off a remarkable list of Ethiopian endemic birds. All flights, park fees and expert guiding are included.

Best Time to Travel

The dry months of October to March give the clearest weather and the best road conditions on the Sanetti Plateau, which is where the Ethiopian wolf is most reliably seen. Wolf sightings are possible year-round, but the long rains from June to September can make the plateau road difficult and cloud the high moorland.
