Volcanoes National Park
Welcome to Volcanoes National Park:
Covering approximately 160 Km2 of the rainforest, the Volcanoes National Park is located in Rwanda precisely in the Ruhengeri province which is on the country northwest part. It is home to five of the eight volcanoes in the mountain chains of Virunga. The five volcanoes are known as Sabyinyo, Bisoke, Karisimbi, Muhabura, and Gahinga. Two great African National parks namely Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo near the city of Goma and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda form part of the borders of Volcanoes National Park. These three Parks are home to African mountain gorillas. Golden monkeys can be seen in the volcanoes, National Park. The park was the base of Dian Fossey, who's an American primatologist and conservationist known for undertaking an extensive study of mountain gorilla groups from 1966 until her 1985 murder.
Why Go?:
Dreaming of coming face to face with a mountain gorilla in the real jungle of Africa known as the best place to see these animals which share most of their DNA with us? The Volcanoes National Park is the place to be for an ultimate gorilla trekking experience in Africa. It is just the best place to go for a full gorilla experience, the park is a natural habitat for more than 400 peaceful mountain gorillas. The park is one of the best and top protected national parks in Africa due to the effort which the Rwandan government has been deploying to maintain the park. The permit can be a bit expensive as the government is trying to control the influx of tourists interring the park. Top rangers and safari tour operators are available to escort you on this journey of discovery.
Where to Go?:
We highly recommend staying at one of the top safaris lodges of Anbeyond such as Bisate lodge and enjoys a truly dramatic natural setting at the heart of an amphitheater formed by eroded volcano cones. Six conically shaped thatched forest villas are tucked into the lush forest setting, spacious verandas opening out onto magnificent views of the surrounding peaks. The traditional shapes of the suites are a nod to Rwandan culture, while the sumptuous interiors maximize comfort and warmth while making the most of the scenic view. Alternatively, consider the Virunga and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodges. The first is a real mountain retreat near the Volcanoes National Park and the latter is a spectacular forest retreat just on the foothills of the Virunga.
