See the largest hospital in the southern hemisphere – the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, as you enter the city. Other highlights include a drive through the suburbs of Pimville and Kliptown via the Regina Mundi Church, en-route to Vilakazi Street.
Vilakazi Street – the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners – Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu – once resided.
The Mandela House at 8115 Orlando West; Nelson Mandela moved here in 1946 with his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase and his first son. From 1958 he was joined in the house by his second wife, Nomzamo Winfred Madikizela (Winnie). Nelson Mandela returned to 8115 for a brief 11 days after his release from Robben Island in 1990, before finally moving to his home in Houghton. The house was subsequently turned into a museum.
We will drive past the Hector Petersen Museum on our way out of Soweto. From here we venture off to the Cradle of Humankind.
This fascinating site, allows one to see some of the incredible natural beauty of our country, while also experiencing some of the fauna and flora found in our region. This area is recognised as one of the world’s most important palaeo-anthropological sites. The tour includes an “underground boat ride” while traversing the four elements of nature!
